Integration. What is it and why is it important?

Integration is a buzzword in psychedelic therapy. But what does it mean and why is it important? While sometimes integration can happen organically, with the sheer number of practitioners who specialize in it and books written on the topic clearly integration is arising as a crucial part of therapeutic work with plant medicines and entheogens. Integration comes from the Latin word integrare, which means to ‘make whole’ or ‘begin again.’ The latter definition feels resonant with the 5-MeO-DMT experience where all models and reference points for understanding the nature of reality are removed temporarily. Once the ego reintegrates into the psyche, the initiate into this “God Molecule” has the opportunity to put back together their framework for reality in a new way. Integration support can help to make sense out of the experience on a highly individual level, helping them see links between what arose during the experience and themes they have noticed in themselves, in their behaviour, decisions, and reactions. Is something coming up to shift or be healed?

This inquiry can be made with the support of an integration specialist or journalling and talking about the experience, helping to make meaning out of it. Setting aside time to meet with an integration specialist or participating in an integration circle can give one the space to work on what has arisen to give more awareness to so that the insights aren’t shelved as one returns to regular routines and responsibilities.

Time for integration also maximizes the neurogenesis potential of psychedelic substances. With a high enough dose and good conditions to allow for an impactful experience to unfold, new neural pathways form in the weeks after the experience. New thoughts forms develop when more attention is given to what they would like to shift in their lives. Many of these medicines also have the potential for big nervous system shifts that can be supported with tools, such as breathwork practices and connected time with nature or with loved ones. Once priorities shift, we will find ourselves coming into more balance in important areas of our lives and finding more meaningful ways to be in the world.
